Analysis of Turkish Translations of Emily Dickinson's Poem "Hope Is The Thing With Feathers" in the Context of Eugene Albert Nida's Principles of Correspondence

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the Turkish translations of American poet Emily Elizabeth Dickinson's English poem "Hope is the Thing with Feathers", based on Eugene Albert Nida's principles of correspondence. This study will analyze Selahattin Özpalabıyıklar's translation published in 2006, and within the scope of this study, two new translations that have never been published before, made by the author of this article as a data collection tool for this study, will be analyzed according to the Eugene Albert Nida's "formal equivalence" and "dynamic equivalence" principles. Eugene Albert Nida is known as an important linguist who
focused on the principles of equivalence in translation. This study aims to analyze the translations made using Nida's principles. The formal and semantic features of poetry cause difficulties in translation; because poetry creates meaning by using the sound aesthetics and rhythmic features of the language. In this context, it aims to determine how the ballad form and content of Dickinson's poem are transferred to the target language and culture by translators. Taking into account the difficulty of translation and the originality of the poem, the study will evaluate how compatible the translations are with Nida's principles of equivalence and tried to reveal the differences between the translations. The findings of the research show that the translations of the source work are in compliance with Eugene Albert Nida's principle of dynamic equivalence.

Eugene Albert Nida’nın Eşdeğerlik Prensipleri Bağlamında Emily Dickinson’ın “Hope Is The Thing With Feathers” Adlı Şiirinin Türkçe Çevirilerinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı Amerikalı şair Emily Elizabeth Dickinson’ın "Hope is the thing with Feathers" adlı İngilizce dilindeki şiirinin Türkçe çevirilerini Eugene Albert Nida’nın eşdeğerlik prensipleri üzerinden incelemektir. Bu çalışmada Selahattin Özpalabıyıklar'ın 2006 yılında yayınlanan çevirisi ve bu çalışma kapsamında bu makalenin yazarı tarafından çalışmanın veri toplama aracı olarak yapılan daha önce hiç yayınlanmamış iki yeni çeviri incelenerek Eugene Albert Nida'nın "biçimsel eşdeğerlik" ve "devingen eşdeğerlik" prensipleri üzerinden değerlendirilecektir. Eugene Albert Nida, çeviride eşdeğerlik prensiplerine odaklanan önemli bir dilbilimci olarak bilinir. Bu çalışma, Nida'nın prensiplerini kullanarak yapılan çevirilerin incelenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Şiirin biçimsel ve anlamsal özellikleri, çeviride zorlukların
artmasına neden olmaktadır; çünkü şiir, dilin ses estetiği ve ritmik özelliklerini kullanarak anlam oluşturur. Bu bağlamda, Dickinson’ın şiirindeki balad biçiminin ve içeriğin çevirmenler tarafından hedef dile ve kültüre nasıl aktarıldığını tespit edebilmek amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışma, çevirinin zorluğunu ve şiirin özgünlüğünü göz önünde bulundurarak, çevirilerin Nida’nın eşdeğerlik kavramlarına uygunluğunu ve çeviriler arasındaki farkları ortaya koymaya çalışmıştır. Araştırmanın bulguları kaynak eserin çevirilerinin Eugene Albert Nida’nın devingen eşdeğerlik prensipleriyle uyum içinde olduğunu göstermektedir.
