Symbolism Example in Music: Formal Change of Requiem

Abstract

In Christianity, prays simultaneously performed with music, which is made in order to alleviate the punishment of the grave of the individual and to mention the decedent, are known as “requiem”. When the history of the music is considered, it can be seen that requiem, which is an independent form and composition of prays taking place in the church, has improved itself with the composer's point of views. In this study, it is aimed to examine three different examples of the development of requiem which is the symbol of polyphonic music in Christian faith. Additionally, the alterations in the texts and sections of requiem and the reasons why the composers write requiem are evaluated.

Müzikte Sembolizm Örneği Requiem’in Biçimsel Değişimi

Abstract

Hıristiyanlıkta bireyin hem kabir azabının hafifletmek, hem de merhumun anılması amacı ile müzik eşliğinde söylenen dualar, requiem adı verilen yapıtlar olarak bilinir. Müzik tarihine bakıldığında; kilise bünyesinde yer alan duaların özgür bir biçimi ve yapıtı olan requiem’in bestecilerin bakış açıları ile gelişim gösterdiği görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada Hıristiyanlık inancının çok sesli müzik sembolü olan requiem gelişiminin üç farklı örneği incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca bestecilerin requiem yazma nedenleri, metinleri ve bölümlerinde bulunan değişimler ele alınmıştır.
