Abstract
This study aims to examine the role of urban agriculture within sustainable urban policies over the case study of Yedikule Gardens which make up the urban agricultural lands in Istanbul. The main objective of this article which investigates the relationship between urban agriculture and sustainability is to discuss the feasibility of urban sustainability over Yedikule Gardens and whether these gardens may be construed as an example to this relationship within the context of current literature and trends. Sustainability which is a key concept in the creation of a common future is also regarded as one of the fundamental arguments of urban development. One of the instruments of sustainable urban development which refers to the transfer of the values generated within the urban context to future generations is urban agriculture. Urban agriculture carried out to fulfill the requirements of the city itself rather than the global food market is an important element for sustainable urban life together with on-site production. Yedikule Gardens used for urban agriculture for more than 1500 years is one of the examples to such production. On-site production and Yedikule Gardens grounded on the principles of on-site production principles are under the threat of the construction processes in Istanbul nowadays and this requires the discussion of agricultural production and urbanization trends together.
Abstract
Bu çalışma, sürdürülebilir kent politikaları içinde kentsel tarımın rolünü, İstanbul’un kent içi tarımsal arazilerini oluşturan Yedikule Bostanları örneği üzerinden incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Kentsel tarım ve sürdürülebilirlik ilişkisini konu alan bu makalenin temel hedefi, Yedikule Bostanları üzerinden, kentsel sürdürebilirliğin olabilirliğinin ve bu bostanların bahsi geçen ilişkiye örnek olup olmayacağının, eldeki literatür ve güncel eğilimler bağlamında tartışılmasıdır. Ortak geleceğin yaratılmasında anahtar kavram olan sürdürülebilirlik, kentsel kalkınmanın da temel argümanlarından biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. Kent içinde üretilen değerlerin gelecek kuşaklara aktarılmasını ifade eden sürdürülebilir kentsel gelişmenin araçlarından biri de kent tarımdır. Küresel gıda pazarının değil kentin kendi ihtiyaçlarına yönelik yapılan kent tarımı, yerinden üretim ile sürdürülebilir kent yaşamı için önemli bir unsurdur. 1500 yıldan fazla bir süredir kentsel tarım için kullanılan Yedikule Bostanları da, bu üretim örneklerinden biridir. Yerinde üretim ve yerinden yönetim prensipleri ile çalışan Yedikule bostanları günümüzde İstanbul’un yapı inşa süreçlerinin tehdidi altındadır ve bu durum tarımsal üretim ve kentleşme eğilimlerini bir arada tartışmayı gerektirmektedir.
