Subject Access to Printed Periodicals in Library Catalogs: An Analysis of Subject Headings Assigned to 13 Journals

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the subject headings assigned to printed journals, a type of serials, in terms of their compliance with the structure and content of MAchine Readable Cataloging (MARC). The study investigates the subject headings assigned to randomly selected 13 printed journals by 14 university libraries. Accordingly a total of 517 subject heading entries, consisting of 485 entries in 650 Subject Added Entry – Topical Term and 32 entries in 651 Subject Added Entry – Geographic Name fields, were extracted from the catalogue records. The entries were analyzed descriptively by comparing their structure and content with the MARC 21 Bibliographic Framework. The results reveal that the second indicator of the 650 field mostly shows the Library of Congress Subject Headings List (LSCH) as the theasurus used to determine the subject heading. However, 245 out of 433 entries are in Turkish. For 47 entries, the second indicator of the 650 field was missing in contrast to MARC standard. Another striking result of the study is that in about a third (34%) of the 485 entries where field 650 was used, it was found that the content that could be given in the subdivision fields was given in the main subject heading subfields. Furthermore, eight libraries have assigned journal title for seven journals, nine libraries assigned geographic name for eight journals, two libraries have assigned personal names for two journals and a library has assigned form of the information resource for a journal as the main subject heading. Likewise to 650 field, the Turkish content is given as a subject heading without being properly specified in the indicators of 651 field. The study concludes by pointing out that there are inconsistencies between the codes given in the indicators and the contents of the sub-fields, misuse of the sub-fields, assignment of journal titles as subject headings. In this regard, there are incompatibilities in terms of the structural and content-related guidelines specified in the MARC 21 standard. The originality value of this study lies in the fact that it describes the errors made in the assignment of subject headings, based on the conformity of the subject headings assigned by 14 libraries for 13 printed journals to the MARC 21 standard for subject access to print journals where there is limited literature on the subject.

Kütüphane Kataloglarında Basılı Süreli Yayınlara Konusal Erişim: 13 Dergiye Atanan Konu Başlıklarına Yönelik Bir Analiz

Year 2024, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 55 - 69, 30.06.2024
https://doi.org/10.33721/by.1449660
