Abstract
The city of Çankırı shows the characteristic features of Anatolian residential architecture to a large extent. Çankırı has hosted many civilizations throughout history and is an important settlement with its history, culture and architectural heritage. Çankırı is among the rich cities of Anatolia in terms of traditional residential architecture and culture. However, an urbanization that is increasing day by day and does not fit the cultural texture of the city causes the traditional structure to deform. In the sociological sense, new living spaces and housing types are increasing day by day as required by today's modern social forms. In a sense, this can also be considered as the loss of tradition. Today, where modern life is encouraged in societies, houses that can meet the needs of new lifestyles dominate the cities. This situation causes the dissolution and abandonment of the traditional structure. Factors such as the encouragement of modern lifestyles, the desire to live comfortably and comfortably, and the demands for better conditions also affect the abandonment of traditional houses.
In this study; the urban protected area and urban transformation area in Çankırı, which houses have the traditional housing texture, are examined in terms of morphological and socio-cultural characteristics. During the study, information was collected by observation, interview and source scanning methods. In addition, data were created by using maps, photographs and survey techniques. In the scope of the study, in determining the morphological and socio-cultural differences, analyzes were tried to be made by selecting a section from the urban protected area, which has the characteristics of the historical urban texture, and the urban transformation areas of the city. The physical formation and development periods and processes of the city were examined comparatively by using visual materials such as painting-photographs, aerial photographs and textural map analyses. In this study, it is observed that the traditional houses in the city, which is seen by examining the physical and social structure in line with the field researches, have left their place to today's modern structures. Çankırı has remained between traditional and modern identity, but it has not been able to be either traditional or modern. It has the appearance of a hybrid urban identity that shows both urban identity features at the same time.
