To be or not to be Athlete: Positive Thinking and Stress in Individuals with Physical Disabilities

Abstract

Positive thinking skills that can be sustained throughout life help individuals to reduce their stress levels by positively affecting individuals psychologically and socially. In this study, positive thinking skills and perceived stress levels of physically disabled individuals were examined in terms of some variables. The survey method, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. The population of the study consists of physically disabled individuals living in Ankara, and the sample group consists of 186 physically disabled individuals. Personal Information Form, "Positive Thinking Skills Scale (PSS)" and "Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)" were used as data collection tools in the study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 package program. While the confidence interval of the research was determined as .05, it was determined that the data conformed to the normal distribution. Independent sample t-test independent of parametric tests was used to analyze the variables. However, the analysis part was completed by using correlation analysis and simple linear regression analysis. In the findings obtained from the statistics, it was observed that the perceived stress level of physically disabled individuals who actively do sports is low. At the same time, it is among the other findings that the perceived stress level decreases with the increase in positive thinking skills. As a result, it is possible to say that doing sports regularly will decrease the perceived stress level of individuals with physical disabilities, thus increasing their positive thinking skills.
