THE CORRELATION BETWEEN NURSES' ALTRUISM STATES AND COMPASSION FATIGUE

Abstract

Aim; This study was conducted to determine the correlation between altruism and compassion fatigue of nurses. Method; The sample of this cross-sectional descriptive study consisted of 184 nurses working in a training and research hospital. The data were collected between September 2022 and February 2023. The data were collected with the ‘Sociodemographic Characteristics Form’, ‘Altruism Scale’ and ‘Compassion Fatigue Scale’ by face-to-face interview method. Results; The participants had a total score of 66.71±12.76 on the Altruism Scale and 30.07±9.71 on the Compassion Fatigue Scale. There was a statistically significant, weak positive correlation between the total scores of the Altruism Scale and the total scores of the Compassion Fatigue Scale (r=,150; p=,042). There was a statistically significant, positive and very weak relationship between the total scores of the Altruism Scale and the secondary trauma sub-dimension scores of the Compassion Fatigue Scale (r=,173; p=,019). Conclusion; In the study, altruism scores of nurses were found to be high. Although the compassion fatigue and burnout sub-dimension scores of the nurses participating in the study were not above the average, they were found to be related to the altruism scores of the nurses. This relationship shows that altruism can turn into a pathological state when it deviates from its purpose and when the nurse ignores her own needs and wishes. In addition, it was observed that the positions in which nurses worked and their satisfaction with the unit they worked in affected their compassion fatigue.

HEMŞİRELERİN ÖZGECİLİK DURUMLARI İLE MERHAMET YORGUNLUKLARI ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİ

Abstract

Giriş ve Amaç: Bu çalışma hemşirelerin özgecilik durumları ile merhamet yorgunlukları arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemek amacıyla yapıldı. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Kesitsel tanımlayıcı tipte yapılan bu araştırmanın örneklemini, bir eğitim araştırma hastanesinde çalışan 184 hemşire oluşturdu. Araştırmanın verileri Eylül 2022- Şubat 2023 tarihleri arasında toplandı. Veriler “Sosyodemografik özellikler Formu”, “Özgecilik Ölçeği” ve "Merhamet Yorgunluğu Ölçeği” ile yüz yüze görüşme yöntemi ile toplandı. Bulgular: Katılımcıların Özgecilik Ölçeği toplam puanı 66,71±12,76; Merhamet Yorgunluğu Ölçeği toplam puanı 30,07±9,71’di. Hemşirelerin Özgecilik Ölçeği toplam puanları ile Merhamet Yorgunluğu Ölçeği toplam puanları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı, pozitif yönde zayıf bir ilişki vardı (r=,150; p=,042). Hemşirelerin Özgecilik Ölçeği toplam puanları ile Merhamet Yorgunluğu Ölçeği İkincil Travma alt boyut puanları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı, pozitif yönde çok zayıf bir ilişki vardı (r=,173; p=,019). Sonuç: Çalışmada hemşirelerin özgecilik puanları yüksek bulundu. Çalışmaya katılan hemşirelerin merhamet yorgunluğu ve tükenmişlik alt boyut puanları ortalamanın üzerinde olmamasına rağmen hemşirelerin özgecilik puanları ile ilişkili olduğu görüldü. Bu ilişki özgeciliğin amacından saptığı ve hemşirenin kendi ihtiyaç ve isteklerini göz ardı ettiği durumlarda patolojik duruma dönüşebileceğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca hemşirelerin çalıştıkları pozisyonların ve çalıştığı birimden memnuniyetlerinin merhamet yorgunluklarını etkilediği görüldü.

Araştırmanın yapıldığı kurumdan çalışma izni alındı. Ayrıca araştırmanın örneklemini oluşturan hemşirelere araştırma hakkında ayrıntılı bilgilendirilme yapılarak sözlü ve yazılı onamları alındı.
