BATIN CERRAHİSİ YAPILAN HASTALARIN ÖĞRENİM GEREKSİNİMLERİ

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the study was to describe learning needs of patients who has abdominal surgery before discharge. Methods: The sample of cross-sectional and descriptive study consists of 144 patients who underwent herniectomy, appendectomy and cholecystectomy at surgical clinic in State Hospital in western of Turkey, between March 30 and May 30, 2014. Ethics commitee approval and informed consent is obtained from patients before the study. The data were collected using Patient Learning Needs Scale (PLNS) and personal information form by face to face interviews. The analyses of the data were carried out using descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test in SPSS 15.0. Results: The mean age of patients was 47.36±16.16 years, 51.4% were men, 39.6% had elementary school education or less. The mean total score of PLNS is 207.52±24.14 and the highest level of significance is of drugs sub-dimension with 4.39. Total PLNS scores and sub-dimensions of PLNS between level of education, previous hospitalization, previous surgery, body mas index and training time was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, we determined that the learning needs of patients who had undergone abdominal surgery before discharge was high. Surgical nurses should arrange discharge training programs according to the individual characteristics and learning needs of the patients in order to provide their patients' care.
