ATTİTUDES OF NURSES WHO WORK İN İNTENSİVE CARE UNİTS TOWARDS DEATH AND CARİNG FOR DYİNG PEOPLE

Abstract

Objective: This research was planned and performed the purpose of determining intensive care nurses'(ICN) attitudes toward death and caring for dying patients.Methods: The study sample consists of the 120 nurses who are working in a department of intensive care unit in an education and research hospital in western of Turkey, between May and June, 2013. Ethics commitee approval and informed consent is obtained from nurses before the study. Data is collected by; face-to-face interviews, personal information form, Death Attitude Profile Revised (DAP-R). The analyses of the data were obtained by using descriptive statistical, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Walles test in SPSS 15.0.Results: The mean age of patients was 31.80±6.54 years, 91.7% of women, 68.3% of graduate and postgraduate and the mean of total work time was 10.50±7.04 years. It was found that 63.3% of nurses were trained, most of nurses were naturally accepted to death, 17.5% of nurses want to care terminally patients. It was determined that the highest score was the escape acceptance subscale of DAP-R, the lowest score was neutral acceptance subscale of DAP-R. There were significant differences between the approach acceptance subscale of DAP-R, ICU type, working time and religious status (p<0.05).Conclusion: In this study the mean subscale score of DAP-R were found moderate. It wasfound that the less positive attitudes towards caring for dying patients for nurses. As a result of research, nursing training programs to increase nurses' awareness about end of life care is recommended.
