Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

Publication Ethics

CEAJ is a peer-reviewed scientific journal aiming to publish original research articles from all engineering disciplines, including bioengineering, within the fields of engineering and architecture. The journal adheres to the ethical principles established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

All parties involved in the publication process (authors, reviewers, editors, and publisher) are expected to comply with these ethical standards.

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

  • Submitted manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under review elsewhere.
  • All authors must have made a significant scientific contribution to the study.
  • Plagiarism, data fabrication, data falsification, duplicate publication, and salami slicing are considered unethical practices.
  • All sources used must be properly cited.
  • Studies involving human or animal subjects must have obtained approval from an appropriate ethics committee, which should be clearly stated in the manuscript.
  • Ethical approval is mandatory for experimental studies in bioengineering and biomedical-related fields.
  • Authors must disclose any conflicts of interest and sources of financial support.

Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

  • Reviewers must conduct evaluations objectively, scientifically, and confidentially.
  • Reviewers should decline evaluation if a conflict of interest exists.
  • Information obtained during the review process must not be shared with third parties.
  • Suspected ethical misconduct must be reported to the editor.
  • In order to protect the rights of authors and the confidentiality of their research, this journal currently does not allow the use of artificial intelligence or AI-assisted technologies by reviewers during the article evaluation process.
  • Reviewers should not recommend that their own work (or that of their colleagues) be cited unless the proposed citations are made for genuine scientific reasons.

Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

  • Unless otherwise agreed with the editor, relevant authors, and reviewers, the journal must maintain the confidentiality of all materials submitted to the journal and all communication with reviewers.
  • Editors make publication decisions based solely on the scientific merit, originality, and relevance of the manuscript.
  • The review process is conducted fairly, transparently, and impartially.
  • Allegations of ethical misconduct are handled in accordance with COPE guidelines.
  • Editors may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools only for technical and administrative purposes (e.g., plagiarism detection, language checks). Such tools must not be used in the scientific evaluation or decision-making process.
  • Editors must not be involved in the evaluation of manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.
  • The editor should not require citations to articles in that journal (or another journal) for reasons other than genuine scientific ones. Editors may remove quotes deemed inappropriate from reviewer comments before sharing them with authors.

Dangerous Chemical and Equipment Use in Studies on Humans and Animals:

If the study involves human or animal subjects, the appropriate ethical statements must be included in the "Methods" section of the article.

In studies involving human participants, the research must be conducted in accordance with the ethical principles established by the World Medical Association for medical research involving human subjects (Declaration of Helsinki). The author must ensure that all procedures in the article are carried out in accordance with relevant legislation and corporate regulations and include a statement to that effect. The date and reference number of the ethical approval obtained in this statement should also be included in the "Methods" section of the article. Additionally, a statement confirming informed consent was obtained from participants and/or their legal guardians in studies involving human subjects should be included in the article. The privacy rights of human participants must be protected under all circumstances.

All animal experiments in the studies must be conducted in accordance with the Animal Research Reporting of In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE) guidelines. Authors should clearly state in their work that these rules have been followed. Additionally, the institutional and/or licensing committee approving animal experiments must be specified with all relevant details, and all experiments must be confirmed in the methods section as being conducted in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations stated.

If the study used chemicals, procedures, or equipment that posed unusual hazards, these must be clearly stated in the article.

Use and Disclosure of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Scientific Writing:

If generative artificial intelligence was used during the article preparation process, this must be disclosed. Generative AI tools help researchers synthesize complex literature, provide an overview of a field or research question, identify research gaps, generate ideas, and offer specialized support for tasks such as content editing, language improvement, and readability enhancement. However, these tools should never replace human critical thinking, expertise, and evaluation skills. Artificial intelligence technology should always be implemented under human supervision and control, and the authors are responsible and accountable for the content of their work. The use of AI tools in the article preparation process should be disclosed by adding a statement at the end of the article when it is first submitted. This statement will be included in the published study and should appear in a new section before the bibliography.

Sample statement for AI use: During the preparation of this study, the author(s) used [AI TOOL] for the purpose of [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and assumed full responsibility for the content of the published article.

Please note: In order to protect the rights of authors and the confidentiality of their research, this journal does not permit the use of AI tools by reviewers, and restricts their use by editors strictly to technical purposes only.

Adding, Removing, or Reordering Authors in the Author List: The corresponding author is expected to carefully decide on the list and order of contributing authors before uploading the manuscript to the system. The addition, removal, or reordering of new authors can be done before the article is accepted and with the approval of the journal editor. For such a change request, the corresponding author must submit the following documents to the editor: (a) the justification for the change in the author list, and (b) written confirmation from all authors indicating their approval of the addition, removal, or rearrangement. If an author is added or removed, this approval must also include the relevant author's own approval.
