Generative AI in ELT Graduate-Level Research Education: An Integrative Review

Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly becoming embedded in academic research and writing practices in graduate education. This integrative review aims to synthesize empirical studies examining how ELT/English-major graduate students use GenAI to support academic research processes and research reporting. Following Cooper’s (1982) integrative review framework, a systematic search was conducted for studies published between 2022 and 2025. After applying ELT-context inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 empirical studies were retained for analysis. Using thematic synthesis, the findings were organized around three main themes: (1) GenAI-supported research reporting (2) AI literacy and ethical concerns, and (3) instructional support and training for GenAI integration. Across the reviewed studies, GenAI tools were most used during the research reporting stage, particularly for planning and drafting research texts, paraphrasing sources, and supporting idea development. While gains in efficiency, clarity, and confidence in research reporting were often reported by the students, the studies also revealed common concerns related to the threat of plagiarism, inaccurate references, and dependence on GenAI. Evidence of structured integration remains limited, with few studies detailing course-embedded training for AI-enhanced research skills. Overall, the findings highlight the need for structured, research-cycle-aligned, and ethics-informed training models to support GenAI use in graduate-level research education.
