Abstract

Intertextuality is a theory and approach highly utilized in English language and literature departments while analyzing a literary text and work. Intertextuality is about revealing a text’s underlying meanings and comprehensions by considering different perspectives. Intertextuality has been analyzed critically by different researchers and well-known figures such as Kristeva, Ögeyik and Bakhtin. They have scrutinized texts and work from a critical perspective by having an intertextual stance. Hereby, the aim of this study as a bibliographic analysis is that intertextuality is an underestimated term in the field of English language teaching (ELT). Besides, as a critical theory, intertextual activities could be utilized in coursebooks or as extra-curricular activities by presenting an analytical stance. This is a way to achieve a critical literacy environment in which students will have a space to interpret the texts from judicious viewpoints, which enhances their critical reading and thinking skills. For this reason, this study presents intertextuality as a novel and suggested approach that could be employed by means of extra-curricular activities or analysis of coursebooks’ activities. Today’s world is defined as critical and digital era in which learners encounter with soft skills such as critical thinking skills and creativity. In this vein, today’s learners should retain critical understandings view to critical reading skills embedded in intertextual analysis and activities. It must be noted that novel approaches and theories are needed in language teaching to foster the needs of learners in a foreign language.
