Reinterpreting the Craftsmanship Today: Is It New Craftsmanship?

Abstract

Craftsmanship which can be defined as the combination of the skill which is gained after the learning processed is completed or as the handmade production of the objects, was the main production type before Industrial Revolution. Together with the transition of the mass production, craftsmanship lost its value in economy, craftsmen became workers and pro type products superseded the handicrafts products. Unfortunately, within this change the interest to craftsmanship was decreased. However, the interest to craftsmanship is getting increasing day by day. It can be said that, this growing interests has got different economic, cultural and social reasons. Active labour market programs which provide employment and the national and international decisions about protecting the handicrafts and the appreciation of the consumption of the handicrafts products in the postmodern society within the scope of new consumption patterns may be regarded as the examples of the arousing interest of the craftsmanship. Within the scope of this study, it is discussed that craftsmanship is not an alternative to mass production in spite of the growing interest to craftsmanship and the commoditized of handicraft products which symbolizes the local culture in global world. According to this, the concepts of craft and craftsmanship has been explained and then the place of craftsmanship in the social life, premodern, modern and postmodern period evaluated and the reasons of growing interest to craftsmanship has been described through this study.
