Roma’nın Anadolu’daki Doğu Sınırında Bulunan Karargahlar Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Roma İmparatorluğu, sınırlarını genişletmeye ve yeni eyaletler kurmaya başladığı dönemden itibaren sınır hattı üzerinde bir çok yere askeri yapılar inşa etmiştir.M.S. 1.yy’dan sonra imparatorluğun doğu sınırı olan Fırat nehir hattı da, askeri yapılarla donatılmıştır.Fakat burada Hadrianus Duvarı gibi kesintisiz bir tahkimat görülmez. 1970’li yıllardan itibaren Fırat Nehri üzerine inşa edilen barajlar sebebiyle gerçekleştirilen kurtarma kazıları ile birlikte, o zamana kadar fazla bilgi sahibi olmadığımız askeri yapılar tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, tespit edilmiş olan ve Türkiye sınırları içerisinde kalan Roma Dönemi Fırat nehir hattı savunmasına ait karargâhların, arkeolojik veriler yardımıyla bir değerlendirmesini yapmak; askeri mimarinin sınırlara göre değişiminin nedenlerini anlamaya çalışmak ve daha sonraki çalışmalar için doğu sınır hattı ile ilgili araştırma zeminini oluşturabilmektir.

Abstract

The Roman Empire built military structures on many frontiers from the beginning of the period they started extending their borders and establishing new provinces. Since the 1st c. A.D., the Euphrates River borderline, the Eastern frontier of the Empire, was equipped with military structures. However, there is no continuous fortification observed in this area as in the case of Hadrian’s Wall. Thanks to the rescue excavations carried during the construction of dams on the Euphrates River in the 1970s, military structures, which were not well known by that time, were identified. Accordingly, the aims of this study are: to make an assessment of the Roman military quarters in the Euphrates River defense line identified in the borders of Turkey with the help of archaeological data; to try to understand the reasons of the change in the military architecture according to the borders; and to establish grounds for further studies of the eastern borderline of the Empire.
