Treatment Methods for Tannery Wastewater
Abstract
The tannery industry is one of the leading industries in Turkey and produce large volumes of wastewater as a result of leather processing. This wastewater includes a lot of leather fragments, soluble proteins, hairs, lime, sodium sulfate, sodium hydroxide, chromium, phenolic substances. The substances are found in high volume in the wastewater and recycling opportunities are very limited. In the wastewater; sulfur, chromium, organic substances, oil and different types of nitrogen are present as the most important pollutants. For the removal of these contaminants from the tannery wastewater, physical, chemical, biological, advanced treatment and combinations of the methods are used. In this study, wastewater characteristics of tannery industry and treatment processes and process combinations are discussed in detail.
