Exploring the E-Mentoring Experiences of Coach Influencers on Instagram

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of social media influencers who provide coaching services via Instagram.

Method: Focusing on individuals who demonstrate similar characteristics in presenting coaching services through social media, this study employed a holistic single case study design (case analysis) within the framework of qualitative research. Using purposive sampling, a total of seven bodybuilding coach social media influencers were selected based on the criteria of providing remote coaching (e-mentoring) services via Instagram and reaching a broad audience with a certain number of followers. Data collected through structured interviews were analyzed using thematic content analysis with the assistance of MaxQDA software. To enhance credibility, researcher triangulation was achieved by involving a second expert researcher in the analysis process. In addition, member checking was conducted.

Results: As a result of the data analysis conducted following the interviews with the coaches, the findings were organized under four main themes: Financial Concerns, Psychological Well-Being, Ethical Concerns, and Informal Distance Education.

Conclusion: Interviews with coaches who provide remote coaching via Instagram revealed that they emphasized the importance of social media communication in career planning shaped by body presentation and financial concerns. While contributing to their clients’ identity and skill development, they also stressed the necessity of taking ethical considerations into account.
