Examination of Studies on Athlete Identity with Bibliometric Mapping Method

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 2, 45 - 56, 29.06.2025

Abstract

Purpose: In this research, it is aimed to interpret the general trends, development and change of athlete identity in the historical process on visuals.
Method: In order to reveal the athlete’s identity through research in the literature, bibliometric analysis was applied with the Biblioshiny interface in the R programming language. With bibliometric analysis, publications in the Web of Science database were discussed and research in the historical process was visualized.
Results: Within the scope of the research, the historical beginning of studies on athlete identity, author contributions, number of documents and the most frequently used words on the subject were discussed.
Conclusion: According to the analysis results, it was determined that research on athlete identity in the field of sports sciences was producted by 1275 authors between 1992 and 2024. It was observed that the author who published the most on athlete identity was Ronkainen with 11 publications. It was stated that the words most discussed in the research were sport, identity, athletic identity and performance.

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 2, 45 - 56, 29.06.2025
