LATİFES IN HÜSEYİN RÂMİZ’S ÂDÂB-I ZURAFÂ

Abstract

The term tezkire is derived from the root zikr, which means “to mention” or “to remember.” In the tradition of Divan poetry, works that recount the lives of poets and provide examples of their poetry are called tezkiretü’ş-şu‘arâ or “poets’ tezkires.” Over time, writing tezkires became a tradition in Turkish literature. Today, tezkires are considered the foundation of biographical genres. One of the subjects of classical Turkish literature is humor. Instead of the term mizah (“humor”), the words latife, nükte, and fıkra are used today. In earlier cultural contexts, the terms mutâyebe, mutâyebât, and mülâtafe were used. Latifes are remarks that amuse and cheer people while also containing subtle meanings. Some works consist entirely of latifes, while in others they may occasionally be encountered. One type of work in which latifes can be found is the tezkire. The most important work of Hüseyin Râmiz, written in the eighteenth century, is Âdab-ı Zurafâ. Hüseyin Râmiz’s tezkire is an important source for researchers studying Divan poetry, as it provides information about certain poets that is not found in the tezkires of Sâlim and Safâyî, and because the author composed it in his own distinctive style. In his tezkire, Hüseyin Râmiz included latifes belonging to poets. Through these latifes, he enhanced the beauty of expression, enriched the biographical information, and made the tezkire more engaging. In this study, after briefly introducing Âdab-ı Zurafâ, the latifes identified in the tezkire are examined. The latifes are evaluated in terms of their subject matter.
