TÜRK KAMUOYUNDA BÜYÜK KANTO DEPREMİ (1923)

Abstract

Japonya’da 1 Eylül 1923 tarihinde öğle saatlerinde 7.9 şiddetinde Büyük Kanto depremi yaşanmıştır. Depremin merkez üssü Tokyo’nun yaklaşık kırk mil güneygüneybatısındadır. 20. yüzyılda Japonya’yı vuran en yıkıcı doğal afet olan bu depremle birlikte tsunami de gerçekleşmiş ve büyük bir yangın çıkmıştır. Böylece depremin verdiği zarar daha da artmıştır. Büyük Kanto depreminin ardından birçok ülkeyle birlikte Kızılhaç da Japonya’ya yardımda bulunmuştur. Deprem Türk kamuoyunda da büyük bir etki uyandırmıştır. Konu TBMM gündemine taşındığı gibi Türk hükûmeti Japonya’ya taziyede bulunmuş ve Kızılay da üzüntülerini iletmiştir. Türk basınındaki çeşitli yazarlar deprem nedeniyle üzüntülerini dile getirmiş ve Japonların gösterdiği çabayı takdir etmişlerdir. Bunun yanı sıra basında deprem üzerinden Japonya’yı eleştiren siyasi yazılara da yer verilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı Büyük Kanto depremini, tarihsel araştırma yöntemi kullanarak Türk kamuoyundaki yansımalarıyla değerlendirmektir. Bu çerçevede ağırlıklı olarak birinci el kaynaklar kullanılmıştır. Türk tarih yazımına daha önce konu olmamış bu çalışmada, depremin sadece yol açtığı sosyal ve ekonomik sonuçlara değil Japonya’nın uluslararası siyasi konumuna olası etkilerine de işaret edilmiştir.

GREAT KANTO EARTHQUAKE IN THE TURKISH PUBLIC (1923)

Abstract

On September 1, 1923, at noon, the Great Kanto earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 occurred in Japan. The epicenter of the earthquake is about forty miles south-southwest of Tokyo. With this earthquake, which was the most destructive natural disaster to hit Japan in the 20th century, the tsunami also took place and a great fire broke out. Thus, the damage caused by the earthquake increased even more. After the Great Kanto earthquake, the Red Cross, along with many other countries, provided aid to Japan. The earthquake had a great impact on the Turkish public as well. As the issue was brought to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the Turkish government expressed condolences to Japan and the Red Crescent expressed its sorrow. Various writers in the Turkish press expressed their regret over the earthquake and appreciated the effort of the Japanese. Furthermore, political articles criticizing Japan over the earthquake were also included in the press. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Great Kanto earthquake with its reflections in Turkish public by using historical research method. In this context, mainly primary sources were used. In this study, which has not been the subject of Turkish historiography before, not only the social and economic consequences of the earthquake but also its possible effects on Japan’s international political position are pointed out.
