TURKISH INDUSTRIY EXHIBITION IN ISTANBUL DURING ARMISTICE ERA
Abstract
One of the developments in capital Istanbul during armistice era was the Turkish
industry exhibition held by Turkish Hearth and which was accessible between October
1st - November 6th 1919. In the exhibition official launch of which was made by Ottoman
Prince Abdülmecid Efendi, mainly the pieces of arts made by craftsmen and institutions in
Istanbul in small and large industry fields were demonstrated. Through the exhibition the
aim was to introduce the industrial pieces of art in various fields to public and at the same
time to give a modern community impression about Turks to occupying forces which were
named as guests. While the total number of participation was 70, 51 of participants consisted
of craftsmen and 18 of them consisted of various institutions. Another participation was
from the media under the name of Sanayi Mecmuasi (Industry Magazine). Despite of the intensive political atmosphere of the era, the developments related with Turkish Industrial
Exhibition took place on Istanbul media to an extent and was especially followed with interest
by Istanbul community. It is possible to evaluate Turkish Industry Exhibition as a successful
initiative except the fact that the emphasis was laid on industrial products produced in
Istanbul. Through the exhibition awareness was raised in public about industry sector and
also it was emphasized that Turks are a modern community.
