The Cold War has had important influence on the Middle East, as on every part of the
world, from Asia Pacific to South America and from Europe to the Caucasus. Undoubtedly,
one of the important manifestations of the Cold War is the military coups that occurred in
the Middle East in the 1950s.The aim of this study is to determine the symbiotic relationship
between the cold war and these coups.
In the introduction of the study, the conflicts between the US, the USSR and Arab
Nationalism, the three major power centers in the Middle East, which fuelled instability
and formed the ground for military coups in the 1950s, were discussed. Then, the outlines
of the coups in Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Iran that took place in this period were examined and
the impacts of global and regional power struggles on these coups were evaluated. Finally,
the “defacto” effects of the blocs of the blockades between the states of the region have been
examined in the context of “Baghdad Pact” and “Great Syrian Project”.
