Khutbah, one of the basics of Friday prayers, is not only a religious text, but also a
tool that aims to inform and illuminate society in many ways. In the first years of Republic,
this feature of Khutbah was frequently used too. For this, firstly, the khutbahs read in Arabic
language in the Ottoman period, were made to be understood by translating into Turkish.
Besides, making Turkish, the centralized khutbahs, were controlled by the state. The state
reached the citizens in political, social, economic and military areas through the khutbahs. In
this way, khutbahs became a very important shareholder and tool in informing, leading and
shaping the society in a desired direction.
