A School Based Prevention Study: The Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program in Turkey

Abstract

Child sexual abuse is a common problem encountered in all societies, with both short- and long-term psychological, physiological, and social consequences. One of the most common ways of coping with this problem is to provide children with school-based skill training programs. This study utilized the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP) prepared by the researchers and included 160 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade students who were aged between 7 and 11. The program included the topics of recognizing emotions, feeling safe, good touch-bad touch, good secret-bad secret, strangers and abuse in virtual environments. Data were collected through the Children's Knowledge of Abuse Questionnaire-Revision III (CKAQ-R) administered before the program, immediately after, and four months after the program. The results indicated significant differences between the experimental and control groups among 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade students. It was found that these significant differences were retained in the follow-up test administered four months after the program. The results showed that the SAPP program was effective in helping Turkish children to recognize sexual abuse and increase their knowledge levels, highlighting its value as an evidence-based, school-based prevention model.
