The Moderating role of Empathy in the Relationship Between Extraversion and Online Prosocial Behaviour
Abstract
Online prosocial behaviour (OPB) encompasses actions performed in online environments such as social media platforms, that are intended to benefit others. OPB may be associated with extraversion, as it may involve engagement in social environments and understanding others' emotions and thoughts, particularly when they require assistance. The impact of varying levels of empathy on socioemotional outcomes remain debated. The aim of the current study was to investigate the moderating role of empathy in the relationship between OPB and extraversion. A total of 248 university students (Mage=20.75, SD=1.56; range =18-25, Nfemale=170, 68.5%) participated in the study. The moderating role of empathy was examined. The research results demonstrated a positive correlation between OPB and extraversion among individuals with low and moderate levels of empathy. However, this correlation was not observed among young adults with high levels of empathy. The results have shown that extraversion does not predict OPB in individuals with high empathy, whereas extraversion is significantly associated with OPB among those with low and moderate levels of empathy.
