THE LIFE AND ACTIVITIES OF SUHEYL b. AMR (r. a.)
Abstract
Suhayl b.
Amr is one of the companions who became Muslim after the conquest of Mecca.
Before accepting Islam, Suheyl was one of the notables of Mecca and was known
by his oratorical power and wealth. When the Islamic message was transmitted to
him, he sided with the Mecca’s polytheists and became a representative of them
in the Hudaybiyah Treaty. While he was one of the captives of War of Badr,
Prophet Muhammed did not allow his punishment. After Prophet's death, he used
his well-known oratory power to keep the Muslims in harmony. Realizing late
joining to Islam, he did not seek after his old reputation, instead of that to
compensate for losses he considered to necessity of struggle in the path of
Allah. While Suheyl b. Amr was struggling to spread Islam in the Syrian front,
he died as a result of the plague in A.H.18.
