The Portrait of Scholar in the Narratives

Abstract

Islam that presents a strong civilisation to the humanity, dignifies knowledge and scholars. Islam has its own unique definition of scholar and that is named as âlim. There are many expressions in the hadiths -which is the second important source of Islam- about the virtues and supremacy of the knowledge and the âlim. When we examine the hadiths related to the topic, we see that the description of an âlim has been constituted incrementally. According to this, the three fundamental characteristic that have to be found in an alim are knowledge, deed and sincerity. In addition, we also see that the responsibilities of an alim in the society are mentioned. In this sense, the most essential responsibility of an âlim is to annunciate the religion by always following the right and the truth. Another responsibility of an âlim towards society is education. Education of a person is one of the most sacred tasks. Âlim on this point too, should fulfil the duties on him and teach the good and beneficial to the individuals of the society. Besides this, alim also should keep away from all kinds of discourses and acts that will generate unrest in the society. In this context, Âlim also has a significant position in the society’s unity and solidarity. Today one of the most important points that the Islamic societies need is the alims that have these qualifications.
