Duties and Responsibilities of the Family Members In the Ottoman Empire

Abstract

Family is the smallest building block of the society. Marriage and establishing a family is as a natural need for a hunian being as well as it is a religious duty. Human be ing needs to pay attention for communication between family members in order to move along the family forever which isa source of happiness in lifetime and in Hereafter. In this study, the duties and responsibilities of a member of a family for household communication in Ottoman Empire will be presented, according to the books about family and morality which are published between Tanzimat Declaration and foundation of the Republic. These duties and responsibilities will be analyzed in four sections: between the spouses, parents' responsibilities and duties towards children, children's responsibilities and duties towards their parents and between the children.
