Bosnalı Bir Şeyhülislam Mehmed Refik Efendi
Abstract
Refik Efendi was born in 1814 (H. 1229) in Rogitica (Çelebipazarı),
Bosnia. His father is Ali and· his grandfather ... is Hacı Abdullah. Refik
Efendi w as attending elementary school when his father passed away.
Refik Efendi moved to Sarajevo (Saraybosna) after the iricidence,
where he continued his education and worked.as a clerk at the judicial
court.
Refik Efendi moved to Istanbul in 1833 (H.l249) and attended Amcazade
Hüseyin Pasa Medrese and Fatih Medrese.(!) He attended the ctures of Ahıskalı Ahmed Efendi and Gürcü Mehmet Efendi, and ac-

Refik !;fendi. traveled to Damascus (Şam) in 1837 (H. 1253) and
"':stayedtherE{ for~a-year.Durirıg-his stay, he conducted detailed studies
on· Ibn Arabi's wqr~s. .
Fallawing his trip tö Damascus, Refik Efendi first started working at
the the Directorate of Foundations (Evkaf) and then moved to the Directorate
of Religious Affairs (ME!şihat) where he served at various positions
until 1868.
Refik Efendi was the Chief Religious Officer (Şeyhülislam) from August
9,.1866 to April 30, 1868 and after that he served asa member of the
Assembly of Ministers (Meclis-i Mahsus-ı Vukela) until his death on
April 20, 1871. He is.buried .at the cemetery of the Fatih Mosque.
Refik Efendi, a harpworking and a very successful civil servant of his
times, was also a master of Islamic jurisprudence (Fıkıh). He acquired
highest scientific degrees and was awarded the most prominent state
decorations of the era.
