Drone Transportation and its Use in Last-Mile Distribution

Year 2020, Volume: 24 Issue: 2, 285 - 298, 31.12.2020

Abstract

As one of the fundamental building blocks of modern economy, transportation is a very dynamic research and
practice area, and it is open to improvement. In this regard, the last-mile distribution, which is deemed as the final
step in shipment routing and usually refers to the movement of goods from the warehouse or retailer to the final
customer, is considerably costly and complex in terms of planning due to many constraints, such as the shape and
weight differences among products, different delivery regions, long distance, the necessity of delivering products
within desired time-windows. Other issues associated with last-mile distribution are traffic congestion, emission
amounts, and labour costs. Changing customer profiles and demands, and the increasing amount of online
shopping require a more effective last-mile distribution process. With the help of different technological
solutions, the issues related to delivery time, cost and environmental damage are tried to be reduced, and the
overall process is tried to be made more effective by using various new methods, tools and solutions. Although
there is still more work to be done on privacy, security, environmental and technological issues, it seems that the
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, more commonly known as drones, will have a wider usage in last-mile distribution
with the help of technological developments and legal regulations developed for them.

Drone Taşımacılığı ve Son-Adım Teslimatta Kullanımı

Year 2020, Volume: 24 Issue: 2, 285 - 298, 31.12.2020
