Diagnostic approach to short stature in the pediatric endocrinology clinic and efficiency of green zone

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the cases applied to pediatric outpatient clinic with the short stature and the examinations performed on them. Materials and Methods: Consecutive cases who applied to the Şanlıurfa Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Endocrinology outpatient clinic with short stature in a 15-month period were analyzed retrospectively. The referral criteria, their history before our first evaluation, their auxology analyzes, and the results of the examination were recorded. Results: 1835 consecutive cases with a mean age of 9.44 were included in the study. 43.6% of the cases were not correctly referred. Anemia, Giardiasis, and positivity of autoantibody of Celiac Disease were the most common pathology detected in the examinations examined, respectively. In 1026 blood samples analyzed, none of the calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, sodium, creatinine tests were abnormal; only one potassium test was above normal. Conclusion: 43.6% of the cases who applied to the pediatric endocrinology clinic with the complaint of short stature were in the normal height range according to age and gender. Another remarkable result of the study is that 40.4% of the cases referred by physician's decision were referred without measuring height. The fact that no pathology could be found in most of the routinely requested tests in children with short stature has led to discussion of the necessity and efficiency of these tests.
