Objective View of Electronic Cigarette Usage

Abstract

Purpose: Electronic cigarette is a device designed for helping the people who want to quit tobacco smoking. In the recent few years, its use has been spreading in a great deal. Its properties, the effects on human health and its potential for helping to quit smoking attract attention all over the world. In this review, it is aimed to have the readers an objective point of view by through consideration of the publications. Materials and Methods: In accordance to the aim, the general knowledge about electronic cigarette device and its use and; the studies performed on the subject, evaluated as in the forms of surveys, clinical observations and clinical interventional studies examining its potential harmful effects, have been considered in a detailed way Results: In general, the interpretations are made as electronic cigarette can supply some of the effects of nicotine, taken from tobacco cigarette and; hence, it is an important potential tool for quitting tobacco cigarette. However, it is indicated to have some threats to health and more research about its health effects should be accomplished; even if it is not so harmful as tobacco cigarette. Additionally, the studies, finding its harm potentials being related to its quality and production design, are drawing attention. Conclusion: The studies about electronic cigarette, which is found a place of use and spreading all over the world for quitting or lowering the harmful effects of tobacco cigarette, are not yet enough, in respect to its potential using purposes. Uncertainity exists about the place of electronic cigarettes in tobacco control. More research on the subject is urgently needed at both individual and population levels.

Elektronik Sigara Kullanımına Objektif Bakış

Abstract

Amaç: Elektronik sigara, tütün sigarası içme alışkanlığını bırakmak isteyen tiryakilere yardımcı olmak amacıyla geliştirilen bir alettir. Son bir kaç sene içinde, diğer ülkelerde olduğu gibi, Türkiye"de de kullanımı bir hayli yaygınlaşmıştır. Bu aletin özellikleri, insan sağlığı üzerine etkileri, tütün sigarasını bırakmaya yönelik potansiyeli dünya çapında ilgi çekmektedir. Bu derlemede, konu üzerine yapılan yayınları gözden geçirerek okuyucuların objektif bir bakış açısına sahip olmalarının sağlanması amaçlanmaktadır. Materyal ve Metod: Belirtilen amaca yönelik olarak elektronik sigara cihazı ve kullanımına ait genel bilgiler ile cihaz üzerine yapılan çalışmalar incelenmiştir. Bu konuda yapılan çalışmalar; anketler, klinik gözlem çalışmaları ile potansiyel zararlı etkilere yönelik klinik ve girişimsel çalışmalar şeklinde detaylı bir şekilde gözden geçirilmiştir. Bulgular: Genel olarak elektronik sigaranın, tütün sigarasından alınan nikotinin bazı etkilerini karşılayabildiği, bu yüzden tütün sigarasını bırakmada önemli bir potansiyel olduğu şeklinde yorumlar yapılmaktadır. Bununla birlikte tütün sigarası kadar zararlı olmasa da sağlık için birtakım tehditler taşıdığı ve yapılan çalışmaların fazlalaştırılması gerektiği belirtilmektedir. Ayrıca belirlenen zarar potansiyellerinin ürün kalitesi ve imalatı ile ilgili olduğu şeklinde yayınlar da dikkati çekmektedir. Sonuç: Tütün sigarasını bırakmak veya zararlı etkilerinden kaçınmak üzere dünyada yaygın kullanım alanı bulmuş olan ve kullanımı giderek yaygınlaşan e-sigaranın, bu potansiyel etkileri konusundaki çalışmalar henüz yeterince değildir. Tütün kontrolü konusunda e-sigaranın yeri henüz belirsizdir. Bu konuda yapılacak araştırmalara birey ve toplum düzeylerinde ivedilikle gerek duyulmaktadır.
