Abstract

Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Chalder Fatigue Scale in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Year 2020, Volume: 45 Issue: 1, 114 - 118, 31.03.2020

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFQ) based on the importance of measuring fatigue, an essential symptom in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).
Materials and Methods: This study was carried out with patients fulfilling the diagnosis of OSAS in a group of newly diagnosed patients. 95 patients with OSAS were included in the study. The validity analysis of the scale for the data collected was performed with exploratory factor analysis, while the property of reliability was determined using the Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient and item-total correlation tests.
Results: The internal consistency of the CFQ was 0.92. Item-total correlation coefficients were between 0.32 and 0.83. For the exploratory factor analysis of sample adequacy of the CFQ, Kaiser-Meger-Olkin (KMO) coefficient and Bartlett coefficient was calculated as 0.89 and 699.21, respectively. The single-factor solution was obtained with an eigenvalue of 6.13, representing 55.8% of the variance. The factor loadings of the items were between 0.35 and 0.88.
Conclusion: In the current study, a single factor solution was obtained in the explanatory factor analysis of CFQ, and it did not match the original two-factor structure of CFQ. The Turkish version of CFQ, which was performed for the first time in current current study, was shown to be valid and reliable in OSAS patients.
