Old
Uyghur Turkic, the branch of Turkic language developed on the basis of Buddhism
and Manichaism-based teachings, is a period in which a religious literature
reflecting the philosophies of these teachings gives rich materials. Especially
in line with Buddhism, Sanskrit, Chinese, Toharian languages transferred to
Old Uyghur Turkic works, texts reflecting the Buddhist understanding in Turkic
language has been witnessed in writing. Especially, Buddhist works from various
languages were transferred to Old Uyghur Turkic by Buddhist Uyghur priests.
The Uyghur priests who wanted to convey the beliefs based on these teachings
with the language they would understand to the public provided the processing
of the Turkic language with the religious terminology they developed. The
Uyghur priests who searched for the Turkishization of religious terms in the
texts transferred from the foreign languages to the Old Uyghur Turkic brought
the idea of faith together with the linguistic consciousness. In this
respect, the expression şireşti bayagut
seen in the texts of Old Uyghur Turkic is one of the examples of Turkishization
against the Buddhist and Manichaean terms. şireşti
bayagut hendiadyoin, which consisted of the words are şireşti and bayagut which
was first seen in Old Uyghur Turkic, is a religious term that describes the
“merchant class” which has important duties within the Buddhist community. In
this study, it will be aimed to reveal the value of the expressions in Turkic
language and culture within the linguistic and religious evaluations about the
words of şireşti and bayagut, which constitute the structure
of this hendiadyoin, by placing the texts that the şireşti and bayagut
expressions are witnessed primarily. In particular, a different version of the
word bayagut in Islamic Turkic texts
will be mentioned and the conceptual value that the concept represents in both
Buddhist and Islamic culture will be tried to be determined.
