The expression
cicianne “stepmother” is a new use in
Turkish. It appeared approximately in the early 20th century. The first sources
give the meaning of the word as “grandmother”. As far as can be seen, the
meaning of “stepmother” was added to this later. The word cici in phrase is taken from the baby talk and means “beautiful,
cute”. So the expression cicianne
means “beautiful mom” and this is a product of efforts to sweeten her up. But
it is also claimed that the word cici
in this phrase is the same as çiçe “aunt”
in the historical sources of Turkish.
According to this view, cicianne is
not the mother of the person but the woman who is in mother’s position means
the aunt who is in the mother’s place. When current data is evaluated, it is
quite natural and compulsory that cici
in the word cicianne means
“beautiful, likable”. Moreover it is strongly possible that cicianne may be translated from belle-mère, literally which means
“beautiful mom” in French. While considering relation between French and
Turkish, as in many example, it is highly logical that this expression is
translated from French too.
