The Use of Some Specific Drought Indices to Evaluate Meteorological Drought Events in the Black Sea Region of Turkey

Abstract

In this study, Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) were employed for drought characterisation by using precipitation, and precipitation and temperature data series, respectively, at a 3-month timescale. In addition, correlation coefficients between SPEI and SPI were calculated for twenty meteorological stations located over the Black Sea region of Turkey and were assessed to decide the representative nature of drought indices. Results showed that there is a remarkably strong correlation between SPEI and SPI. The correlation coefficient is equal to or greater than 0.93 in coastal areas, but a gradual decrease in relatively dry zones. The highest and lowest correlations were found to be 0.98 and 0.82 for Rize station located by the sea and Gümüshane station away from the sea, i.e., in the inland region, respectively. Research results suggested that data availability and the site-specific conditions of the region should be taken into account when using indices.
