Cobalt and Nickel Absorption of Sunflower and Lucern Grown under Different Soil Textures
Abstract
A pot experiment was established to study the effect of soil textures on cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) absorptions (uptakes) by sunflower and Lucerne plants and to evaluate these analytical results with the clay types of the experimental soils. With this objective, sandy clay loam and clayey soils were placed in the pots and different doses of Co and Ni (A0; A1 and A3) were applied. After the harvest, Co and Ni contents of the plants and the remaining Co and Ni left in the soils in the pots were studied. In this regard, total and plant extractable Co and Ni in the soils were analyzed. The specified remaining Co and Ni contents were also correlated with the clay types of these soils. Results showed that the experimental soil with high in smectite and illite clays had higher Co and Ni adsorption capacities than the other soil with a sandy clay loam texture. With respect to the absorption capacity of the plants, findings showed that Lucerne can remove more metals than sunflower.
