The Effects of Silver and Copper Nano Particle-Infused Vase Solutions on the Vase Life of Cut Narcissus (Narcissus L.) Flowers

Abstract

Narcissus with its attractive appearance, pleasant fragrance, and ability to bloom during winter, has recently become widely preferred as a cut flower. The most crucial parameters determining quality in cut flowers are vase life and flower quality. In this study, the effect of nano copper, which is hypothesized to exhibit similar effects to sodium hypochlorite and nano silver due to its antimicrobial properties and ethylene inhibition, on vase life was investigated in addition to nano silver in vase solutions. Six different vase solution applications were studied, including 20 ppm nano copper, 20 ppm nano silver, 30 ppm nano copper, 30 ppm nano silver, sodium hypochlorite (3ml/L), and tap water (control), examining their effects on narcissus vase life, relative fresh weight, and daily solution uptake parameters. While an increase was observed in relative fresh weight and daily water uptake in the first two days, a decrease was determined in the following days. However, in vases with added nanoparticles, relative fresh weight and daily water uptake continued to increase, significantly extending vase life compared to the control group. Nanoparticle applications positively influenced vase life and flower quality, with the addition of nano copper to vase water showing a higher effect than nano silver and significantly extending vase life compared to all other applications. Consequently, the results suggest that nano copper, in addition to extending vase life by reducing antimicrobial activity similar to nano silver, may also have a nourishing effect on vase water.

Gümüş ve Bakır Nano Partikül İçerikli Vazo Solüsyonlarının Kesme Nergis (Narcissus L.) Çiçeklerinin Vazo Ömrüne Etkileri

Abstract

Nergis çekici görünümü, hoş kokusu ve kışın çiçek açabilmesi nedeniyle son zamanlarda kesme çiçek olarak yaygın olarak tercih edilmeye başlanmıştır. Kesme çiçeklerde kaliteyi belirleyen en önemli parametre vazo ömrü ve çiçek kalitesidir. Bu çalışmada, antimikrobiyal özelliklerinden ve etilen inhibitörü olmalarından dolayı vazo solüsyonlarına eklenen sodyum hipoklorit ve nano gümüşe ek olarak aynı etkiyi göstereceği düşünülen nano bakırın vazo ömrü üzerindeki etkisi araştırılmıştır. Çalışmada 20 ppm nano bakır, 20 ppm nano gümüş, 30 ppm nano bakır, 30 ppm nano gümüş, sodyum hipoklorit (3ml/L) ve çeşme suyu (kontrol) olmak üzere 6 farklı vazo solüsyonu uygulamasının nergislerin vazo ömrü, oransal taze ağırlık ve günlük solüsyon alımı parametreleri üzerine etkileri incelenmiştir. Oransal taze ağırlık ve günlük su alımı verilerine bakıldığında ilk 2 günde yükselme oluşurken sonraki günlerde düşüş belirlenmiştir. Ancak nano partikül eklenen vazolarda oransal taze ağırlık ve günlük su alımı artmaya devam etmiş ve vazo ömrünü kontrol gurubuna kıyasla önemli oranda arttırmıştır. Nanopartikül uygulamaları vazo ömrü ve çiçek kalitesini pozitif olarak etkilemiş olup, vazo suyuna ilave edilen nano bakır uygulaması, nano gümüşten daha yüksek etki göstermiş ve vazo ömrünü tüm uygulamalardan daha çok arttırmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar neticesinde nano bakırın, nano gümüş gibi antimikrobiyal aktiviteyi azaltarak, vazo ömrünü uzatmasına ek olarak vazo suyuna besleyici bir etki oluşturduğu düşünülmektedir.
