Usage of Online Media for in-Service Training Activities: An Overview of Observations, Problems and Recommended Solutions

Abstract

Rapid change and innovation in information and communication technologies have made it imperative to use these technologies in teaching-learning processes. In this context professional development for teachers become more important to ensure the effective and efficient use of information and communication technologies in the teaching-learning process. The purpose of this study was investigating the use of online media for teachers’ professional development in Turkey and in some Asian countries that were successful in PISA. In the study; status of existing on-line service activities; implementation process; the disruptions observed in the implementation process and obstacles related to the implementation process, opportunities offered by Web 2.0 technology have been examined. In reaching this goal a search was conducted in Web of Science. When the literature on professional development of teachers is examined, it was seen that online environments are used to improve the quality of learning and teaching process. Also in these studies one common point reached that using online learning community effectively created opportunities for cooperative learning and working. Through online learning communities that allow teachers to interact with each other achieved collaboration with the sharing of individual applications and experience, overcoming the difficulties in the teaching-learning process. On the other hand, if an institution wants to take advantages of all the opportunities offered by technology along the teaching-learning process, the benefits on the basis of the opportunities offered by Web 2.0 technologies through online media is important for organizing of activities related to teachers' personal and professional development. In addition, it was revealed that there is a need for availability of professional development activities for teachers in improving their capacity for being lifelong learners and for their adoption to innovation and change in technology
