Some Issues Related to Muhammad's Reliability in the Context of Theological Relations

Year 2007, Volume: 9 Issue: 27, 117 - 132, 01.06.2007

Abstract

The fact that the Koran, which forms the foundation of Islam, is based upon the divine inspiration is a critical subject. In the Koran, it is constantly emphasized that the divine inspiration was systematically controlled by Allah and that The Prophet Muhammad was not entitled to add and subtract to what had been previously inspired to him by Allah. On the other hand, it is a historical fact that The Prophet did not have an especial knowledge with regard to religious practices and doctrines of the Christians and Jews before his mission. Moreover, that The Prophet was an illiterate before his divine mission is explained in all respects in the Koran. In the light of these evidences we argue in this study that the claim that “The Prophet Muhammad attempted to bring about a religion based upon his own imagination as a divine message” is epistemologically an illegitimate assertion
