Artificial Intelligence in Sufi Studies: Opportunities and Ethical Concerns

Abstract

Sufism, with its expansive conceptual framework, symbolic language, spiritual experience, and rich scholarly tradition, constitutes a sensitive field that demands particular care in the application of digital methodologies. Traditional approaches to Sufi studies have recently entered a new phase through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As in other disciplines, this development has opened up new avenues of debate within Sufi scholarship. Alongside AI’s technical assistance and capacity for information processing, the uncertainty surrounding its limitations presents various risks in terms of ethics, methodology, and scholarly originality. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the use of AI in Sufi research, assessing domain-specific potentials as well as possible ethical challenges. Employing a qualitative content analysis methodology, the study investigates the functional roles AI may assume within Sufi research processes. AI proves to be effective in several areas, including literature review, translation support, simulation generation, and enabling interdisciplinary collaboration. However, risks emerge when researchers adopt AI-driven models -originally intended as digital assistants- as guiding frameworks. These include ethical ambiguities and deficiencies in contextual understanding. This article aims to suggest the potential areas where AI can be employed in Sufi studies and to present an original approach regarding its possibilities and violations.
