Semantic Manifestations of the Concept of ‘Rayb’ in the Semantic Construction of Doubt in Arab-Islamic Thought
Abstract
This article investigates the semantic evolution and existential dimensions of the root rayb in Arab-Islamic thought. While the existing academic literature predominantly analyzes the concept of doubt through the epistemological term shakk or within the strict confines of theological and philosophical debates, this study adopts a root-based semantic approach to reveal the deeper, multi-layered historical trajectory of rayb. The primary objective of this research is to transcend the conventional binary of certainty versus doubt, demonstrating that rayb is not merely a cognitive deficiency but a profound existential condition indicating turbulence, instability, and ontological anxiety.
To achieve this objective, the research employs a root-based semantic analysis methodology, tracing the contextual shifts of the term across a broad historical and interdisciplinary spectrum. The qualitative analysis encompasses classical Jahiliyyah and Muhadram poetry, the Holy Quran, prophetic traditions, classical Islamic jurisprudence texts, and modern philosophical and literary translations. By isolating the core meaning of the root and systematically observing its structural and conceptual transformations, the study maps how the Arab-Islamic imagination institutionalized the concept of doubt over centuries.
The research findings indicate four major semantic phases in the evolution of the concept. First, in the pre-Islamic Jahiliyyah period, the term initially described purely physical agitations or biological needs, such as the shaking of a water bucket or the restlessness of sleep deprivation. However, it rapidly evolved in classical poetry into a powerful metaphysical metaphor. Expressed frequently as the turbulence of time and the calamities of death, it reflected an intense ontological anxiety and the fundamental fragility of human stability in the face of an unpredictable fate. Second, with the advent of Islam, the Quranic and prophetic discourse redefined rayb as a strict theological category. It was positioned as an active, destructive skepticism that prevents the establishment of absolute faith in the human heart, thereby distinguishing sincere belief from hypocrisy.
Third, within the realm of Islamic jurisprudence, the concept underwent a rigorous procedural institutionalization. It shifted from a subjective psychological fear to an objective legal criterion, specifically utilized in family law to regulate waiting periods and ensure the accurate protection of lineage. Fourth, in the modern era, the root experienced further semantic expansion due to interactions with Western thought. It generated entirely new terminologies to accommodate complex modern concepts, representing both systematic philosophical skepticism and psychological paranoia or pathological doubt.
In conclusion, the historical and semantic journey of the root rayb demonstrates the highly dynamic capacity of the Arabic language to adapt to shifting cultural, theological, and legal paradigms. The findings definitively establish that in the Arab-Islamic worldview, doubt extends far beyond a simple epistemological void. It is a comprehensive, multi-layered construct that represents the persistent threat of chaos to an established order and encapsulates the fundamental human restlessness in the face of existential uncertainty. This semantic mapping provides a crucial framework for future comparative studies on related concepts such as shakk and zann, offering a deeper anthropological reading of Arab-Islamic intellectual history.

Abstract
Arap dilinde şüphe olgusunu karşılayan rayb (r-y-b) kökü, salt zihinsel bir tereddüdü aşarak insanın varoluşsal çalkantılarına işaret eden derin bir anlamsal arka plana sahiptir. Bu makale, bu kökün temel anlam çekirdeğinden hareketle Câhiliye döneminden modern felsefi metinlere kadar uzanan semantik evrilimini merkeze almaktadır. Klasik şiir divanları, Kur’an-ı Kerim, hadis, fıkıh ve modern dönem düşünce metinleri üzerinden yürütülen kök temelli anlamsal tahliller, kavramın dildeki yapısal dönüşümünün izini sürmektedir. Elde edilen veriler, rayb lafzının başlangıçta kovanın sarsılması ya da uyku sersemliği gibi tamamen fiziksel çalkantıları ve biyolojik ihtiyaçları gözlemlerken, zamanla ölüm ve kader karşısında duyulan ontolojik kaygıya dönüştüğünü göstermektedir. İslam’ın doğuşuyla birlikte bu kavram, iman ile inkârı birbirinden ayıran itikadi bir kategori hüviyeti kazanmış; fıkıh literatüründe ise nesebin korunmasını sağlayan hukukî bir ölçüt olarak yaygınlaşmıştır. Modern dönemde ise kavramın, Batı menşeli epistemolojik kuşkuculuğu ve psikolojik krizleri karşılayan yeni formlara büründüğü görülmektedir. Netice itibarıyla rayb, Arap-İslam tasavvurunda sıradan bir bilişsel boşluğu ifade etmekten çok ötesine geçerek; kurulu nizamın kargaşaya dönüşme tehlikesini ve insanın bilinmezlik karşısındaki köklü huzursuzluğunu temsil eden çok katmanlı bir inşayı yansıtmaktadır.
