The Emergence of Biblical Archaeology and Methodological Disputes
Abstract
Archaeology is one of the most important disciplines which closely relates with the history of religions. Biblical archaeology means corporate work of these two disciplines. Biblical archaeology focuses on the comparison and interpretation of the information provided by the Bible with archaeology. Biblical archeology has gained an important place especially in the Bible studies which developed after the 19th century. Excavations performed especially in Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Syria and Iraq, have enhanced on the development of this discipline in the West for the last two hundred years. However, the fact that the information in the Bible comparing has revealed some methodological debates between the two disciplines. While some researchers have argued that it is necessary to compare whether the Bible was compatible with historical data, some of them assert that this comparing is unnecessary. This article includes the emergence of Biblical archaeology, the importance of this discipline in Biblical studies, remarkable discoveries in history and methodological debates.
