Education of Holy Qur'an Memorization in Islamic Countries From the Beginning Until Present

Abstract

Throughout history, The Holy Qur’an has been protected both by memorization and literary composition from the very beginning of it’s revelation until now. The name “Qur’an” of The Holy Qur’an refers to it’s verbal protection, whereas the name “Kitap” (The Book) refers to it’s literal protection. We have our Holy Book as Mushaf (specific name for the full written text of Qur’an) now, however for the most part of the history, it had been protected by memorization depending on oral tradition and transferred from generation to generation. In the beginning, the main purpose of memorization of The Holy Qur’an was the protection of itself, yet the positive effect of worshipping aspect of memorization is high enough to be considered important. As a matter of fact, it does not seem to be possible to explain the continuous increase of Qur’an memorization otherwise. In this study, historical course of Qur'an Memorization which is of remarkable interest in every period of time in Islamic territories and today's application methods for Indonesia case will be examined.
