The Limits of Reason and Relationship Between Religion and Philosophy in the Thought of Maimonides

Abstract

In this article, we will deal with the ideas of Maimonides, who was a Jew of Andalusia and a philosopher of Islam, on the relationship between religion and philosophy. Like Farabi, Ibn Sina, Ibn Bajjah, and Averroes, he was one of the thinkers, who were in the line of Aristotelian tradition. In his philo-sophical system, he emphasized human reason and considered it as authori-ty. However, he did not regard it as the absolute authority which can give the human-being the knowledge of all the things. Above all, for him, we need some other source of knowledge about what mundos sur -luna has got. This source is the religion itself and so, there is a strong correlation between reason and religion. Hence, reason and religion both are not in contradictious but in reconciled situation and source of all these is God
