Rhetorical Analysis as a Method for the Understanding of the Hadith Matns: Its Promises and Limitations

Abstract

In this article the rhetoric has been studied from its origins as a Hellenistic device and than its developments in our time. After, its counterpart in the Islamic world that is al-balâgha has been researched in the context of the semantics and seen that al-balagha has similar dimensions with the Hellenistic rhetoric. These similarities include both several concepts and contents. Than by pointing out the activities for understanding of ahadith in the past, the promises of the rhetorical method have been scrutinised. For example because of lying particular stress of this method on the figures of thought, the species of the discources and the parts of a speech it seems to be useful for understanding of ahadith and determining their contexts. But due to the problem of belongness of ahadith for their origins and incompatability of the Hellenistic rhetoric with İslamic culture this method seems to be appropriate not for the whole hadith literature but just for suitable ones.

Hadislerin Anlaşılmasında Bir Yöntem Olarak Retorik Analiz: Vadettikleri Ve Sınırlılıkları

Öz

Bu yazıda retorik kavramı öncelikle antik kökeni itibariyle ele alındıktan sonra retorikteki çağdaş gelişmelere de kısaca değinilmiştir. Retorik kavramının İslam dünyasındaki yansıması olan belagat terimini, anlama olgusu çerçevesindeki uzantılarıyla ele aldıktan sonra onunla antik Yunan retoriği arasında birtakım benzerliklerin bulunduğu görülmüştür. Bu benzerliklerin, hem kavramsal dü-zeyde hem de içeriksel düzeyde olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Daha sonra hadislerin anlaşılmasına yönelik geçmiş çabalara değinilerek retorik analizinin hadislerin anlaşılması konusunda vaat ettiği hususlara değinilmiştir: Örneğin düşünce figürleri, söylev türleri ve konuşmanın bölümleri üzerindeki vurgusu nedeniyle bu yöntemin hadislerin anlaşılması ve bağlamlarının belirlenmesi noktasında işe yarar olduğu gözükmektedir. Fakat hadislerde kaynağa tam olarak aidiyet sorunlarının bulunması ve retoriğin İslam kültürüyle tam olarak örtüşmemesi, bu yöntemi tüm hadis literatürü için değil de bu yapılara uygun hadisler için uygun kılmakta olduğu görülmüştür.
