The Prayer/Religious Life In The Traditional Alawism(Alawiyyun) And Their Approaches To The Basic Islamic Prayers
Abstract
This paper deals with the practices of prayer in the traditional Alewism(Alawiyyun). The traditional Alewism(Alawiyyun) which can be labeled as “a sufi (dervish) order based on ancesrtry (lineage)” takes all its views/thoughts from mysticism/sufism (a dervish order). This situation is seen more clearly in their understanding and practicing of prayer. The Alawis who take “Cem/ Jam (Gathering)” which is a kind of reciting of God’s name (zıkr) as the center of their prayer life interpret all kinds of prayers such as daily prayers, fasting, pilgrimage to Mecca etc as known as the basic prayer of Islam in the frame of life of sufism (dervish order.)
