Siyonizm ve Anti-Siyonizm: Hahamların Perspektifinden İsrail-Filistin Sorunu

Year 2025, Volume: 25 Issue: 2, 945 - 971, 30.09.2025
https://doi.org/10.33415/daad.1708597

Abstract

Ethical Statement

Bu çalışma Dinler Tarihi Lisansüstü Sempozyumu II’de sözlü olarak sunulan ancak tam metni yayımlanmayan “7 Ekim İsrail-Hamas Çatışması Bağlamında Hahamların Siyonizm’e Bakışı Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme” adlı tebliğin içeriği geliştirilerek ve kısmen değiştirilerek üretilmiş hâlidir.

Zionism and Anti-Zionism: The Israel-Palestine Question from the Rabbis' Perspective

Year 2025, Volume: 25 Issue: 2, 945 - 971, 30.09.2025
https://doi.org/10.33415/daad.1708597

Abstract

Zionism, which developed in the late 19th century as a response to the problems of anti-Semitism and assimilation, developed the goal of establishing a national homeland in Palestine in line with historical and religious references. This goal, adopted at the first Zionist Congress, received the British government's support with the Balfour Declaration and was realized in 1948. However, the fact that Zionism was built on secular nationalist thought caused disagreement among the rabbis. While rabbis who saw Zionism as a stage in the messianic process legitimized Israel and its expansionist policies, rabbis with opposing views opposed Zionist ideals and violence on theological and social grounds. Therefore, this study, which is based on the thesis that the clergy has a decisive role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, aims to address the theo-political elements underlying the Israel-Palestine issue by comparing the criticisms of the rabbis of the traditional view with the theological arguments of the rabbis of the opposing view. The study, which is limited to the modern period, is handled with the historical phenomenological method, and the legitimization of political discourses with the language of religion is explained through the October 7 attacks.

Ethical Statement

This article is the revised and developed version of the unpublished conference presentation entitled “An Evaluation of the Rabbis' Perspective on Zionism in the Context of the October 7 Israel-Hamas Conflict”, orally delivered at the History of Religions Graduate Symposium II.
