The Perception of Islam in Germany under The Light of September 11: A Rupture or a Continuity?

Abstract

After the attacks of September 11th on the World Trade Center and The Pentagon in the United States of America the perception of Islam in Germany has deteriorated. However these attacks and the global Islamic terror alone can’t explain the cause of the negative perception of Islam in Germany. The anti-Islam wave that increased after the attacks of September 11th in Europe can be explained with an Islamophobia which appears in time of crises. Islam was perceived in Germany for several centuries as the “other”. Nowadays the perception of the “other” is charged by a very negative image of Islam and Muslims. The negative image of the “other” helps Germany to strengthen the German and European identity against an “other” which was lost with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. In the sixteenth century the understanding of the “other” was used in order to legitimate and to ensure the pontifical policy and the perpetuity of the feudal system. Orientalism occurred in the age of Enlightenment and caused a change in the understanding of Islam from the political to the cultural area. The “other” is defined as closeness to progress, backwardness and dependence. In this regard the “other” was established inferior in the cultural hierarchy. Despite centuries after the Orientalist point of view have passed, the islamophobic clichés and patterns show an astonishing continuity in Germany. Especially the news, commentaries and caricatures in the German press are assigned by Orientalist approaches. The increased Islam antagonism is a need that occurred in the stream of the End of the Cold War, which strengthen the German and European identity by an antagonistic pole presented by Warsaw Pact under the aegis of the Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union the invention of a new “other” was a political necessity. Under these circumstances the approach to Islam in Germany relates to a rather abstract perception of Islam, than to the concrete life of Muslims in Germany. As a result of this fact, the Islam perception in Germany refers to an abstract perception in a far region. However, the critical approach in the article should evaluate the Islam perception propagandised by the German press with the norms that conform to the high democratic level of Germany. Neither the mentioned Islam perceptions are unchangeable, nor are civil movements closed for an improvement. It is not to abnegate, that in countries with Islamic identity arbitrary and authoritarian practices are far from to be exceptions. Not only religious minorities, but also the members of dominant religious communities suffer from repressive political practices. In this regard the situation of Muslims in Germany is far to compare not only to the minorities but also to all the inhabitants in Muslim States. Consequently the critic on the German press related to the Islam perception, must be considered under this circumstances. However Islam perception in the German press is not cause-oriented regarding the problems in the Muslim countries and regions. Moreover it presumes the Islamic countries as unchangeable and the violence essential to the religion Islam. Concerning these matters the Islam debates in the German press is not only unfruitful, but also dangerous four a peaceful coexistence in a pluralistic country.
