From Mother to Divine: Attachment Theory and Representation of Allah in Islam

Abstract

Attachment theory, as developed by John Bowlby is a psychological theory of personality and social development across the life span. Attachment theory focuses on the development of the bond between infant and caregiver, and the ways in which the functioning of this relationship influences subsequent psychological development. The theory has generated a large body of research on infant and child development and has been extended to the psychology of religion. More recently, Kirkpatrick proposed that the theory provides a powerful framework for understanding many aspects of religious belief, particularly with respect to perceived relationships with God. A central focus of the attachment approach to religion concerns perceived attachments to God. Although God is referred to by many names in the Quran the supreme Name by which He is known is “Allah”. According to Islamic theology, Allah is believed to be always near. In Islamic spiritually Love and Light as the two central attributes of God are particularly significant and have led to distinct models of spirituality. The Quranic Concept “Hubb” (love) is the core concept that determines the relationship between God and human being. This is why the Muslim Scripture (Qur’an) refers to Allah as al-Wadûd, the One Who Loves Most. Two other names, namely ar-Rahman and alRahim are also frequently used in attachment to the Supreme name Allah. The purpose of the present study is to examine the applicability of attachment theory to Islamic concept of God.
