The Place of Religion in Israel’s Educational System in Terms of Social and Political Backgrounds

Abstract

This study explores Israel’s educational system, especially the religious education system in the course of its religious, cultural, and political structures, together with the tendencies and debates around it. It is emphasized that the uniqueness of the school system in Israel compared to other countries is mainly due to the position of religion in school system and in syllabus. At this point, beginning with her historical background of general educational system, the transmission of the traditional schools into the contemporary new school forms, and the establishment of new schools related to the political parties are examined as well as the effects of this process to the present. The educational system consists of state schools which are differentiated as secular and religious and private religious schools. The role and place of religious subjects in these school forms are discussed. The present discussions about religious education are examined under the titles of social and ethnic discriminations, curriculums, financing and supervisions. Finally, the education of other religious minorities and the troubles due to the ongoing Israel-Palestinian debate is pointed out.
